OPENING COMMENTS:
BOARD MEMBERS
Supervisor Buster mentioned the issue of temporary employees within our
County that believe they have not been treated fairly. He referred to an audit
conducted by the State Auditor’s office on Riverside County and a few others
that utilize temporary employee programs. The audit found that there was no
misuse of temporary workers and the movement from temporary to permanent
employment was the highest in our county. He advocated that the temporary
program has saved the County money and given many opportunities for people to
secure permanent positions. He believes the audit will put to rest all the
accusations the temporary program has received. He also suggested we send a
copy to the Service Employees Union and all others concerned with this issue.
Supervisor Stone mentioned Bike to Work Week and that it is not uncommon
for places around the world to have the bicycle as their biggest mode of
transportation. He also mentioned that President Obama is considering to pull funds given to counties who manage illegal
immigrants in their detention centers. Supervisor Stone would like the
Sheriff’s Department to give a brief presentation at the next Board Meeting to
show the number of illegal immigrants that are currently in our detention
centers and the annual cost to house them. If the mandate passes he would like
a follow-up meeting with the Sheriff and border patrol to see what it would
take to get these criminals deported.
STATE BUDGET UPDATE
Supervisor Stone mentioned the Board was given an update during a WRCOG
meeting and it was said the state budget deficit will reach 21 billion dollars
if the initiatives do not pass.
